Tiger Form - Hu Xing

The tiger is king of 100 animals.  In the martial arts there are many tiger forms.  The tiger is powerful and fierce, with entering and leaving, and has a spiritual bearing.

The fierce tiger seizes things in a rush. Its skillful pounce is an exciting thing. One can compare the tiger with the hare.  The tiger's rushing is a fierce posture. The hare's rushing is a lively posture.

"The tiger has the bravery of seizing food". It has the posture of "Fierce Tiger Leaves the Forest."  It has the moving method of running in mountain valleys and the skill of brave fierce pouncing and seizing. An old saying says, "The fierce tiger, comes out of the  cave, is subdued, has double holds his head, its big mouth makes a loud noise, its courage is shocking.  When it lifts its tail, it raises the wind. It leaps the streams, shakes, and turns the awesome power of the wind." The tiger's nature has an independent air. It has the power of shaking its tail, and the bravery of pouncing on food.

In Xingyiquan, the Tiger Form  uses "pouncing energy", the method of tiger and hare rushing.

Master Chen Panling's teachings say, "The 'Tiger Pounce' stepping method is like Pao quan. Each arrow step, joined together with the pounce posture, must be bigger and farther.  The hand method is like Pi quan but transforms in going out.  Each tiger from is a double pi quan.  Pi quan is splitting.  The tiger form is pouncing. From splitting change to pouncing, from pouncing change to seizing.

In the Tiger Form hand method, the grab returns and rises up, overturns to the front, pounces, then drops like separating a brick.  The pounce lowers and also grabs and returns. The grab returns and rises. From the rise, overturn and pounce continuously.  It is rise, drill, overturn, and fall. The tiger form is like pao quan, straight advancing with diagonal striking.

In the Tiger form stepping method, stamp the rear foot, urge the front foot, and leap as far to the front as you can. Practice the scissors step like flying levelly forward.

In practicing tiger form, wait a time, one must cage the strength in the tantien, energy issues to the four limbs, the teeth gape, the eyes glare, and the tiger roars like thunder.

From grabbing down to rising up,and then to forward pounce makes three forms.  Both hands and arms using a turning motion, complete a circle. The three forms are continuous, and the circle is continuous.

Also along with the splitting, we have pushing forwards (tui) and  pushing downwards (an) energy.  The Tiger Form (pounce) is pushing downwards (an) energy.  One needs to distinguish these.

The tiger, in the mountains, is king of the fierce beasts.  In Bagua it corresponds to tui kua, it makes metal.  In the body it corresponds to kan, water, and makes the kidney.  Kan creates wind, and the wind follows the tiger.   This form is complimentary with the dragon form, it is able to pass and assume open wisdom.  In the dantian channels, fire and water meet, and metal and water combine together with the four phases.  In fighting it makes the Tiger form.  This is a form of awesome power and strength.  Raise the sacrum energy (Du Mai), issue from the bubbling well.  Rising and falling are not seen in this form.  To use this fist as it ought, the outer must be fierce and inner must be gentle.  If the form is done correctly, then the tiger subdues and the dantian's qi is full and you are able to raise straight jing to fill the breast.  Taoist classics say, "If you wish to not grow old then fill the breast with straight jing."  Truly these two forms must combine. If the form is not correct, then the spirit won't penetrate the three folds, or flow through the 100 veins. Then the yin is
erroneously infringed upon, and the body weight turbid, not smooth.
